The short rainy season is from the beginning of December till the end of January and the Short Dry season will start at the beginning of February. The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migrates above Suriname toward the South during the rainy season. The passage of the ITCZ is accompanied by rain over Suriname.
It is expected a limited or moderate excessive rainfall and a low potential for flooding and flash floods.

The wetter conditions for Suriname were for nine months in 2022. January, September, and December were drier than the long-term monthly rainfall average.
Discussion
The La Niña condition is likely to continue during the season and will still impact the seasonal climate. 2022 can be considered a wet year. Nine out of the twelve months were wetter than usual. Wetter conditions are still expected for January – March 2023. However, excessive rainfall will be limited or moderate with low potential for flooding occurrences. The temperatures will be cooler than usual.

The season will be wetter than normal. Therefore, keep maintaining drains in the neighborhoods and around crop beds. Plant on raised beds and place animals on higher grounds. Be prepared for moderate rainfall.
